ASRA'S History
Our History
Our Beginnings: Supporting the Community with Heart
ASRA was founded in 1987 by a dedicated group of local people and professionals who recognised a growing need in their community for inclusion. At a time when many elderly South Asian individuals were experiencing isolation, health issues, and social or family challenges, ASRA stepped in—not just as a service, but as a source of comfort, understanding, and connection.
We began in Smethwick as a small community-led initiative, providing shelter through a homeless hostel for those most in need. It wasn’t much, but it meant everything to those who had nowhere else to turn. From these humble beginnings, ASRA grew—rooted in compassion, built on trust, and shaped by the people we serve.
As the community evolved, so did ASRA. We listened, adapted, and expanded our support to meet new challenges. In 2004/2005, we were proud to receive a grant from the Department of Transport to create and publish two editions of a road safety magazine. These were printed in English and also translated into Punjabi and Urdu, ensuring they reached those often left out of mainstream messaging. It was a small project, but one that perfectly reflected our values—accessible, culturally sensitive support that puts people first.
From that first hostel to the wide range of health, social care, and community services we offer today, our journey has always been driven by the same mission: to stand beside our community and go above and beyond for those who need us.
Our Mission
At ASRA, we’re here to make a real difference in the lives of those we care for.
Whether it’s in our day care centre, care in the home or through the many social support services we offer, everything we do is rooted in compassion, trust, and a deep respect for each person’s dignity, independence, and cultural background.
We don’t believe in ticking boxes—we believe in being there. If someone needs help and it’s within our power to offer it, we will. Because for us, it’s not just about care—it’s about community, connection, and making sure no one ever feels alone.
At ASRA, you're not just supported—you’re valued.
Our Journey
ASRA began with a simple purpose: to care for our community. Over time, that purpose has grown with us.
As the needs of those around us changed, so did we—gently expanding our support to include health and social care services, always with the same goal in mind: to be there when people need us most. From supporting elderly and disabled individuals to offering a helping hand to families facing challenges, we’ve continued to walk alongside those we serve.
Today, ASRA is a community association, a registered charity, and a private limited company—but at our heart, we’re still the same. A local organisation built on trust, respect, and care that truly listens. Our mission remains simple: to provide support that’s thoughtful, inclusive, and shaped by the people we’re here for.
Our Goals
Investing in Our Future: Facility Modernisation at ASRA
We’re excited to be moving forward with our Facility Modernisation Plan—an important step in building a brighter, more sustainable future for our community.
At the heart of this plan is a full refurbishment of our Day Care Centre, transforming it into an environmentally responsible space, which demonstrates the welcoming feel of ASRA . Our goal is to reach Net Zero emissions, ensuring that the care we provide also cares for the planet. We’re also expanding capacity so that more individuals can benefit from the vital support, companionship, and activities the centre provides.
Alongside this, we’re developing a brand-new, purpose-built Community Space—a place designed not just for gathering, but for growing. This space will offer opportunities for both personal and professional development, providing workshops, training sessions, and a supportive environment where people of all ages can connect, learn, and thrive.
This project is more than just bricks and mortar—it’s about creating spaces that reflect the warmth, dignity, and inclusivity at the core of everything ASRA stands for.
